Doral is growing up, and artist Michele Oka Doner is an integral part of that growth with Micco, a new cornerstone of the city’s center. The sculpture was commissioned by Codina Partners, who were looking for a “monumental sculpture to serve as a focal point for the newly incorporated City of Doral,” says Oka Doner to Haute Living.  The sculpture, which is named Micco, a Seminole term for “wise leader,” is on the main square and, symbolizes a “Gateway to the Everglades.”

“Having a name endows it with a sense of personhood,” she said. “It was a transcendent and wonderful notion that every village had its Micco. Now this new town of Doral has their Micco. Armando Codina asked me to help him give the city a heart and soul. They built a city hall, will build an elementary school, but knew that in order to have real community they needed a gathering place.”

Oka Doner is from Miami Beach, and is known for her larger-than-life public art installations rooted the natural world, including A Walk on the Beach, a mile-long terrazzo, shell and brass floor at MIA. In December, she was featured as Haute Living’s Woman of Substance and showed at Marlborough Gallery at Art Basel Miami Beach.
