Pretty people, good smarts, a nice town square and some nightlife are the qualities that put Aspen above the rest, earning it the top spot as America’s Favorite Town in Travel + Leisure.

“Beauty abounds in this tony ski town, from the 14,000-foot heights of the surrounding peaks to its residents, who won the No. 2 spot in the survey’s attractive people category—second only to the southern belles of Oxford, MS. (And looks aren’t everything: Aspenites also scored No. 3 for intelligence.),” says the write-up on Aspen.

T+L’s Favorite Towns were determined by fans and followers of the magazine, who were asked to nominate their picks on social media with the hashtag #TLTowns, and then narrow down the 744 towns in 55 categories, including farmers’ markets, museums, adventure travel, and family-friendly hotels. Rocky Mountain locales performed well, with Estes Park coming in at No. 2 and Telluride at No. 7.
