Lincoln Center’s New Multimedia Stage Spectacle
Tired of the typical ballet or Broadway show? Then head to Lincoln Center Festival this weekend and check out “Monkey: Journey to the West,” a 90-minute multimedia stage spectacle featuring circus arts, martial arts, electronica and animation.
The hybrid opera tells the story of a monk’s journey from China to India to receive the Holy Scriptures from Buddha.
“Monkey is as well known in China as Harry Potter,” Shi-Zheng, the 50-year-old Chinese-born director, tells Gotham Magazine. “Most heroes sacrifice themselves for the good of others, but Monkey has the greatest ego. He is a rock star on a path to enlightenment.”
“Monkey: Journey to the West” runs through July 28.
