Today, Sofia Coppola is one of the most successful directors in Hollywood, and the toast of the fashion industry. But no one can say she didn’t pay her dues! Coppola has revealed that she got start fetching coffee for Chanel’s famous head designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld.

“I was 15 or 16 and a friend of my parents worked there and they take a few girls every summer to do an internship,” Coppola revealed in a recent interview. “It was so exciting to go to Paris in the Eighties at the height of Chanel. I was in the design studio, so I got to see Karl Lagerfeld doing haute couture sketches for the final shows. It was incredible – he is so creative. I was getting coffee and doing intern stuff, but just to be around him was amazing.”

Coppola, who features a Chanel-clad Emma Watson is her upcoming film Bling Ring, remains in touch with Lagerfeld despite following a career in film rather than fashion. Coppola is a frequent front-row fixture at Chanel’s fashion shows, and even featured in Lagerfeld’s Little Black Jacket book. “I meet Karl once in a while,” she said. “He’s always really sweet and remembers me.”
