Ten years ago, the Proenza Schouler brand was born in New York City. The story is the stuff of fashion industry legend; Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez met at the Parsons School of Design, and clicked immediately. The duo shared not only an aesthetic but incredible talent, prompting their professors to allow them to work as a team on their thesis collection. While most young designers spend years honing their skills at established fashion houses, Jack and Laz shot right past that stage when Barneys New York purchased their collection. Their designs flew off the tracks, prompting them to show at New York Fashion Week, and it wasn’t long before they got the ultimate seal of approval when they were summoned to meet with Anna Wintour shortly after.

The rest, as they say, is history. Now, ten years later, Proenza Schouler (named for the designers’ mothers) is one of the most lauded labels in the fashion industry, with their own boutique, worldwide distribution, countless celebrity fans and splashy editorial features. If you weren’t one of the lucky few to snatch up a piece of that historic collection, you have the chance to To mark the incredible journey that Jack and Laz have made in the past decade, Barneys New York has reissued Proenza Schouler’s first collection from 2003.

“It was definitely a nostalgic experience to go back to that collection,” the duo said in an interview with Barneys. “We were surprised by how much it still felt relevant and contemporary. We fine-tuned some of the proportions for today but all in all, not much has changed. It is still one of our favorite collections. It was the beginning and because of that it holds so much sentimental value for us. We are so happy to be able to reissue it now to a much larger audience than when it was first offered.”

Kirsten Dunst, Kate Bosworth, Angela Lindvall, Chloë Sevigny and Rashida Jones recently celebrated the first collection at an event at a private residence in Los Angeles. The collection is as relevant today as it was a decade ago, which is a true testament to the talents of Jack and Laz. Our favorites from the timeless styles are the cracked leather pieces.
