The 2013 Tony Awards took place last night at Radio City Music Hall. For the fourth time as a host, Neil Patrick Harris did not disappoint his audience’s expectations of an epic show with his unwavering pizazz and energy. The Broadway star paid tribute to multiple past shows, including OnceOrphansLes Miserables and Annie, with appearances by Mike Tyson, Sandy (the dog from Annie) and Audra McDonald. Yet the true show-stealer was Kinky Boots, which took home six awards: the highly coveted Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations and Best Sound Design. Song composer Cyndi Lauper accepted her award and thanked Broadway through happy tears, saying, “I can’t say I wasn’t practicing in front of the shower curtain for the past couple of days.” Other top award winners were Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike for Best Play, Matilda the Musical for Best Book of a Musical, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? for Best Revival of a Play and Pippin for Best Revival of a Musical.
