The Smith Center for the Performing Arts announced its lineup for the 2013-2014 Broadway Las Vegas series running August 2013 to July 2014. The upcoming season, sponsored by Southern Nevada Ford Stores, brings many of Broadway’s most beloved and famed musicals and plays to Las Vegas for the first time.
The 10-part series features timeless Broadway classics as well as some of today’s newest productions, including the previously announced “The Book of Mormon.” Other shows coming include Les Misérables, The Wizard of Oz, War House, Evita and Mamma Mia.
Combined, the celebrated roster of productions represents an impressive 40 Tony Award wins.
Tickets to the upcoming Broadway Las Vegas series are currently only available to existing season subscribers. Current season ticket holders can renew for the upcoming season beginning Feb. 19. Les Misérables
Wednesday, Aug. 7 – Sunday, Aug. 11
Heralded as one of the most moving musicals of all time, “Les Misérables” is an epic and uplifting story that captures the survival of the human spirit. Called “an unquestionably spectacular production from start to finish” by The New York Times, “Les Misérables” is the winner of eight Tony Awards and has been seen by nearly 60 million people worldwide. The musical features its original famed scores including “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” and “Master of the House.” Since opening at the Barbican Theatre in 1985, “Les Misérables” has been adapted into 21 different languages in more than 40 countries. The Wizard of Oz

An enchanting adaptation of Frank Baum’s 1900 novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and the timeless 1939 MGM screenplay, “The Wizard of Oz” is an Andrew Lloyd Webber production entirely reconceived for the stage. Featuring the classic songs from the Oscar®-winning movie score, including “Over the Rainbow,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard” and “If I Only Had a Brain,” “The Wizard of Oz” opened in March 2011 and features character favorites Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion and Toto as well as new songs from Webber and Tim Rice.
War Horse

Winner of five Tony Awards, “War Horse” is the stage play based off Michael Morpurgo’s namesake novel which inspired Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated feature film. Hailed by The New York Times as “theatrical magic,” “War Horse” is the powerful story of a young boy’s beloved horse, Joey, who has been enlisted to fight for the English in World War I. What follows is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, filled with stirring music and songs and told with some of the most innovative stagecraft of our time. The play premiered at the National’s Olivier Theatre in 2007 and has been seen by more than one million people worldwide.
Sister Act

Produced by Whoopi Goldberg, Stage Entertainment and Troika Entertainment, “Sister Act” tells the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier’s journey in protective custody after witnessing a murder. Stuck in a convent and disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. The hilarious comedic musical was nominated for five Tony Awards and the Associated Press says, “In a word, divine. This is a musical that hits all the right spots, achieving something close to Broadway grace.”
Evita
Tuesday, Nov. 26 – Sunday, Dec. 1
One of the most adored Broadway musicals of all time, “Evita” follows the life of Eva Perón as she rises from the slums of Argentina to the president’s mansion as first lady. One of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famed musicals, “Evita” captures Perón’s journey to becoming one of the most powerful women in the world while her greed, ambition and fragile health create a tragic tale. Winner of seven Tony Awards, “Evita” features some of Broadway’s most beautiful songs including “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “High Flying, Adored.”
Mamma Mia

The story of “Mamma Mia” follows the life of a mother, daughter and three possible dads. Seen by more than 45 million people worldwide, “Mamma Mia” is an ultimate feel-good show written by Catherine Johnson. The musical, a five-time Tony Award nominee, tells the story of a daughter’s quest to identify her father on the eve of her wedding, captured best by the story-telling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs.
Flashdance – The Musical

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the pop culture phenomenon “Flashdance” tells the inspiring and unforgettable story of Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh steel mill welder by day and a bar dancer by night with dreams of one day becoming a professional performer. When romance with her steel mill boss threatens to complicate her ambitions, Alex learns the meaning of love and its power to fuel the pursuit of her dream. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess

Winner of the 2012 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” features stunning new staging and includes such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.” Praised by the New Yorker as “A great achievement!,” the classic story is set in Charleston’s fabled Catfish Row, where the beautiful Bess struggles to break free from her scandalous past that can only be rescued by the crippled but courageous Porgy.
