Charles Philip’s Shanghai Flats at Saks Fifth Avenue Dubai

They’re in – the pretty, comfortable and practical Shanghai flats by Charles Philip which have quickly taken the fashion world by storm.  Originally from Milan, Philip has for several years lived in Shanghai’s former French Concession with his best friend and designer partner Sheila Pitigala. A striped-shirt enthusiast, Charles always thought the world would be a better place if there were more stripes in it! And so be it, there was no surprise when the first Charles Philip flats turned out to be inspired by a striped shirt.

On a hot and humid afternoon in Shanghai, Philip had a white and blue-striped shirt shoe made by a Chinese cobbler on Mao Ming Road. Today, he is joined by his partner and a small team of Chinese shoe cobblers who are the craftsmen of his eponymous slippers.

Together, Philip and Pitigala created their collections by incorporating their favorite elements: the ease of the Moroccan babouche, the elegance of the English gentry slipper and the freshness of striped cottons and soft colorful linens. The shoe design is executed by hand using traditional methods and the finest fabrics.
