Quality, Not Quantity – David Heil

As long as you have a shirt or suit made of a quality fabric, you’re going to get a much longer shelf life out of that garment.

Ever since I started David August, I have known what’s most important, and that is to make a good, quality product. As with most things in life, when it comes to dressing well, less is usually more.

Price point is not the most important thing about buying a specialty item of clothing. If you buy less things of a higher quality as opposed to more things at a cheaper rate, the price evens out anyway. However, a nicer product is not only going to last longer, but it’s also going to bring you more compliments and more enjoyment.

I put a lot of detail and craftsmanship into David August designs. We use wool canvas liners and wool shoulder pads— which are far more costly than synthetic materials—and we don’t fuse our garments at all.

It is also very important to me that you own high-end accessories. For example, you can buy a pair of shoes for $75, but they’re not going to be comfortable, last for a long time and may even damage your feet in the long run. If you want something that looks great and can offfer support, go for high-quality leather with reinforcement stitching. Those shoes are going to last you for years and years and years, mark my words.

Hand workmanship is also very important. As long as you have a shirt or suit made of a quality fabric, you’re going to get a much longer shelf life out of that garment. Homemade products are terrible, but handmade things are beautiful. Well-constructed clothing is all about craftsmanship. We hire artisans to do our handwork, and that sets us apart.
