Hautels: Hotel Hana-Maui Becoming an ‘Experiential Hotel’

Renowned author James Michener called the beaches of Hana on Maui “heavenly,” and it’s a term that has come to define the small, untouched town on Maui’s eastern coastline. Hana, considered one of the last unspoiled Hawaiian frontiers, is also home to the historic Hotel Hana-Maui, a luxurious retreat rooted in Hawaiian traditions.

Starting on June 17, this secluded, award-winning hotel at the end of scenic Hana Highway will undergo a makeover that will transform it into an “experiential hotel.”

Renamed Travaasa Hana, it will be one of two “Travaasa Destinations” — the other is in Austin, Texas — focused on providing guests with an all-encompassing Hawaii experience. The idea is patrons will pay an all-inclusive rate for accommodations, meals, spa treatments and activities, with a la carte options available, too. Travaasa, which is operated by Denver-based Green Tea, has five pillars: adventure, culinary, culture, fitness and spa, while incorporating local and regional elements to create an authentic experience.

Plans for Travaasa Hana including sampling Hawaiian imu (underground oven) cooking, lei-making, surfing, hiking and exploring working plantations and ranches along Maui’s eastern coastline. The new hotel will feature 70 spacious rooms including sprawling Sea Ranch Cottages and bungalow-style Garden Suites offering sweeping views of the ocean and mountains. (Many of these rooms will have private lanai hot tubs.)

Then there’s the Spa at Travaasa Hana

This one-of-a-kind indoor and outdoor wellness center will overlook Hana Bay and historic Kauili Hill. The spa will have nine treatment rooms, an outdoor lava rock whirlpool, indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, a private garden, steam rooms and cold plunge pools.

Pricing for guests of the Sea Ranch Cottages is per person and includes daily spa credit, gourmet meals and snacks, as well as access to all programming and property amenities. Prices start at $ 655 per person, per night based on double occupancy. A la carte pricing is available for guests of the Garden View Suites and starts at $325 per night, based on double occupancy.
