Rankin Exhibit Opens at Milk Gallery

Tonight from 7 to 10 p.m., Milk Gallery (450 West 15th Street) will celebrate the launch of “OPEN Rankin with a private viewing of the photographic exhibit that showcases the culmination of 20 years of Rankin’s work. “I named the show ‘Open’ because its the state of mind I think I need as a photographer,” explains Rankin. “I have to be open to new people, experiences, challenges. I hope my work reflects this.”

The photographer and filmmaker has shot everyone from The Rolling Stones to the Queen of England, and is the genius behind such world-renowned campaigns as the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty and Nike and Bono’s collaborative R.E.D Campaign to eliminate AIDS in Africa.

From June 1-5, Rankin will add an experimental element to his show—Rankin Live. New Yorkers with enthusiasm and original style are invited to submit a photograph of themselves to rankinliveusa@rankin.co.uk. The most original applicants will be invited to Milk Studios to  participate in a once-in-a-lifetime photo shoot in front of the same lens that shot Kate Moss, Colin Firth, Madonna, Jay-Z, and so many more. Each participant will receive a print and digital file of their portrait for $100, a portion of which will benefit Oxfam America, a charity dedicated to finding long-term solutions to poverty, hunger, and social-injustice. Rankin and his team will photograph as many as four people an hour in the gallery space, and within 15 minutes of each shoot, the photographs will be retouched, printed and hung alongside some of Rankin’s most iconic images as part of the evolving exhibition.

Rankin Open Exhibition: May 24—June 10
