Haute Spot: Spa at Halekulani Now Offering Meditation

A luxurious massage can make deadlines and tomorrow’s morning commute vanish in long, steady strokes. But imagine how relaxed you’d be in Wednesday’s board meeting if that massage was paired with true mental rejuvenation.

SpaHalekulani at the posh Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki is now offering a new treatment called the Guided Meditation ($160), intended to ease both the body and the mind. (SpaHalekulani is the first spa anywhere to fully explore the healing cultures of the Pacific Islands.)

“We believe we’re currently the only hotel spa in Hawaii to offer guided meditation as a spa therapy,” says spa director Lena Mossman. “It’s essentially meditation, but with a trained therapist to guide you through the process, to make sure you achieve a relaxed state.”

Here’s how it works: you sit or lie in a comfortable position, taking deep breaths and listening to the soothing words of a therapist who guides you through a mental journey to a place of total relaxation.

The treatment induces a state of calm similar to the sleepiness you feel right before drifting into slumber but without the drowsiness, says lead therapist Brent Koffman. Instead, you’ll feel alert, awake and ready to take on the day. The entire treatment takes about an hour and is available by request in private or group settings.

Pair that with a 55-minute massage treatment that includes SpaHalekulani’s signature foot pounding ritual on the oceanfront deck of the hotel and light refreshments served on the terrace ($180 or $205 with use of a personal steam shower afterward) and you’re set for the rest of the week.
