Every year my aunt orders one big, round birthday cake (with icing!) for her two dearly beloved Chihuahuas, Jack and Rose, from Cleo’s Barkery in Harstdale. She invites all of her friends in town and their pets over, and they have a party. But she makes sure that all of her guests know — the party is for the dogs.
The cake and other party treats, which she ordered a few weeks in advance and carefully babied all the way home, were made with all natural, pet-safe ingredients, such as organic whole grains, preservative-free meats and fresh fruits and vegetables.
All the cakes from Cleo’s Barkery are custom made with your choice of meat — lamb, chicken, turkey, salmon, duck, beef, venison, white fish or vegetarian — and personally designed.
For parties like this one, Cleo’s Barkery also offers specials on birthday favors. My favorite is the “Party for 5” package which includes a 6×3 all-meat birthday cake, five party hats, five treat bags, five toys, five birthday bandanas and a balloon cake topper.
Christine Ciaramello, owner of Cleo’s Barkery, opened the shop to please her 9-year-old Doberman/Bull Terrier named Miss Cleopatra. She had noticed that some of Miss Cleo’s friends were celebrating their birthdays and wanted to join in the fun.
