What Made Him Haute: Seems as though Jeff Koons had instant success with his impromptu works of art. In November 2007, Koons’ works become some of the most expensive art pieces created by a living artist. One of Koons’ first successful pieces was a giant stainless-steel “Hanging Heart” sold at Sotheby’s New York for $23.6 million. The following year in July 2008,  he top his previous creation by making a Balloon Flower (Magenta) that sold for a whopping $25.7 million at Christie’s in London. In July 2009, Koons’ had his first major solo show at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Not bad for an artist that is still living, usually art pieces don’t sell for that amount until long after the artist has passed on.

What Makes Him Haute Now: Now, the National Galleries of Scotland is set to unveil some of Jeff Koons’ most controversial pieces in the Artist Rooms. The Equilibrium Series is a spiritual offspring of his idol Andy Warhol. Koons displays consumer items in glass cases, like the “Three Ball Total Equilibrium Tank,” which consists of three basketballs floating in a glass tank half-filled with water. Michael Jackson and Bubbles a series of three life-sized gold-leaf plated porcelain statues of the late King of Pop embracing his pet chimp. Made in Heaven the most infamous of all his works is a piece inspired by the short-lived marriage of Koons to porn star Cicciolina; the collection displays highly colored paintings, sculptures and photographs of the couple’s explicit sexual positions. Puppy is a 43-ft high topiary sculpture of a West Highland white terrier created from a variety of multicolored flowers. Easyfun Ethereal is a pop art piece made of seven large-scale collage-like paintings that incorporated bikinis, deli sandwiches and enormous lips.
