Haute 100 Los Angeles Update: Eli & Edythe Broad

Having just released the plans for their art museum, the Broads are still making headlines since their start in 1956.

What Made Them Haute: The Broads began with the founding of the company Kauffman & Broad’,he then became CEO and founder of financial company, SunAmerica. Eli has also taken many leadership roles in the Los Angeles area. He is founding chairman and trustee of The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and a trustee of many other organizations. In 1994 he was named Chevalier in the National Order of the Legion of Honor by the Republic of France and in 2004, he became a regent of the Smithsonian Institution.

What Makes Them Haute Now: Along with architecht Elizabeth Diller, the Broads have released their plans for The Broad Museum, a contemporary museum by the Broads Art Foundation. The three-story museum will be home to more than 200 pieces of contemporary art selected from the Broads personal 2,000 piece collection. The couple is also funding the project, using $100 million to build the structure and a $200 million endowment to fund the museum. It will feature almost an acre of column-free gallery space, a lecture hall for up to 200 people, a ground floor multimedia gallery, a lobby with display space and a museum shop. The museum will open with its inaugural exhibition in approximately two years.
