Get ready to be blown away be a traditional holiday story with breathtaking performances, colorful costumes and a classic rendition of the Christmas tale that audiences of all ages have come to cherish and love. Currently playing at the Southwest Arts Center through December 30, Black Nativity is the award-winning play written by the legendary Langston Hughes that has become a holiday staple of sorts for African American audiences that have grown up watching performances or performing it in numerous local theatre adaptations.
This year Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company presents Black Nativity directed, choreographed and adapted by Patdro Harris. The story focuses on the gospel-influenced telling of the classic Christmas story told through a winning combination of scripture, dance, poetry and song that connects a modern church revival to the biblical time of mangers and swaddling clothes. A winner of three Suzi Awards in 2009 for Outstanding Musical Ensemble, Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Costume Design, this production is a magical whirlwind of everything that makes the holiday season special to so many. So well loved and appreciated, this production has been known to compel audiences to return for repeat performances.
Featuring gorgeous set design, infectious musical numbers and a classically beautiful story, this is the perfect way to plunge full steam ahead into the universal magic of the holiday season. As someone who is familiar with Black Nativity, I can confirm that this production is an absolute must-see; you won’t be disappointed, I promise. The good news is that if you haven’t had a chance to see it yet there are several performances (sometimes twice a day) between now and December 30, so hurry up so you can experience the magic that has all of Atlanta rejoicing!
