What Made Her Haute: Chef Michelle Bernstein is a Miami native that is well-known for her innovative dishes, and the unique spin she adds to traditional Latin meals. In 2007, Bernstein won the prestigious James Beard Award for Best Chef: South. Her vivacious personality and delightful cuisines put her on the national map, not to mention her mouthwatering work at her signature restaurant Michy’s. She operates two popular establishments right here in Miami, and was named one of the best new restaurants in 2009 by Esquire.

What Makes Her Haute Now: Today, she has teamed up with The Miami-Dade County Public Schools Chef Partnership Program to help revamp schools lunch menus and make them healthier for students. Chef Michelle Bernstein alongside Chef Kris Wessel spent the day in the kitchen at Edison Senior High with the culinary students in an effort to teach them that healthy food can taste delicious. Students learned that by tweaking a few ingredients in some of their favorite treats, like brownies and cookies, they are making better food choices. Not only did students learn how to put a fresh new approach to traditional dishes, they also walked away with great inspiration from both chefs.
