Last week, 43 island nations and other countries gathered in New York for the United Nations Summit on the Millennium Development Goals. As part of this, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and UN member states conducted the five-year review of the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation, which focuses international attention on island development. AOSIS is currently celebrating 20 years of being at the forefront of the clarion call for urgent international action on Climate Change.
In addition to the formal proceedings, on Friday, Sept. 24, AOSIS Chairman, Prime Minister Tillman Thomas of Grenada welcomed heads of state and foreign ministers to a gala reception at the Turkish Centre.
United Nations Association Brazil Ambassador at Large Paolo Zampolli joined with Ambassador Angus Friday, Ahmet Davutoglu the foreign minister of Turkey, UN Under-Secretary-General Cheick Diarra, and others to extend expressions of goodwill to Prime Minister Thomas and to convey their on going support for a low-carbon future for the planet so as to safeguard the future of the islands and the generations to come.
