The fashion world continues its search for the young talents who will surely hold top ranks in coming years; preparing for a proverbial changing of the fashion guards, if you will. And in an effort to make sure that the spotlights shine on the most promising subjects, programs have been set in motion that utilize the expertise of existing industry heavy hitters to select who will be, On Next.
We’re all familiar with The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and what Anna Wintour and the team have done to further many careers through said program, but this Milan Fashion Week, Anna is there to host a fête that although similar in intention, has a different flair. Along with her Italian Vogue counterpart, Franca Sozzani, and in support of “Who’s On Next,” a program that Sozzani has been at the helm of for the past six years, an event showcasing the finalists was put together at the Museo di Milano’s Palazzo Morando.
The stellar guest list included such iconic members of fashion society as Donatella Versace, Giorgio Armani, and Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana who all came to walk the 18th century courtyards lined with the collections of Milano’s future stars.
Who’s On Next 2010 winner, Erkan Çoruh, whose collections present a dialogue about juxtaposition that he describes as “at the same time classic and radical,” and fellow finalists: Shoemaker, Jerome C. Rousseau; Alessandra Torella of Bragia; Claudio Montias Milano; architecture graduates Silvano Arnoldo and Massimiliano Battois of Arnoldo Battois; The Australian, Gail Sorronda; Davor Mutic of dMajuscule; The Paoloni Group’s MSGM; Spanish-born Elisa Palomino, who enjoyed a stint working at John Galliano; and Rosa Clandestino’s Silvia Argüello, an American-born, Honduras raised beauty of Nicaraguan and Cuban decent, with whom Giorgio Armani spent a considerable amount of time, were all presenting a selection of their award-winning designs as part of city-wide project, “Milano Loves Fashion.”
Today’s open-to-the-public runway show rounds out the week for the finalists who embark on promising careers using this experience as a springboard to catapult them decidedly forward. Taking place in Milano’s major square, Piazza Duomo, the presentation was well-attended, to say the least. One side was punctuated by hundreds of onlookers who stood eagerly to catch a glimpse of the fashions while the other boasted seating for the likes of Anna and Franca, Vogue’s Virginia Smith and Diane Von Furstenberg, who was seen chatting up Rosa Clandestino Silvia’s brother and business associate, Ernesto Argüello—not surprising, as we’re also particularly fond of Argüello’s collection which exudes a femininity and elegance frayed only by carefully selected contradicting elements. I have a soft spot for the well edited.
