John Varvatos and SNL Photographer Mary Ellen Matthews present Live from New York: A Decade of Portraits

In 2000 John Varvatos hit the ground running with the launch of a collection of tailored clothing and sportswear which was instantly recognized by the CFDA with an American Fashion Award for New Menswear Designer (June 2000). That same year New York native Mary Ellen Matthews became responsible for the iconic portraits of the hosts and musical guests of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, a program that has won 21 Emmy Awards and continues to rank the highest ratings of any late-night television program.

Ten years later these two figures whose work is truly enriched in the fibers of American spirit present Live from New York: A Decade of Portraits at the former CBGBs. And it is most definitely a must see.

Live from New York: A Decade of Portraits is the first time in the history of Saturday Night Live that Mary Ellen’s iconic portraits of the show’s hosts and musical guests have been exhibited to the public. Her work includes political figures such as John McCain and Al Gore, to rock legends Mick Jagger and U2, to successful athletes Peyton Manning and LeBron James, to famous actors Jude Law and Scarlett Johansson. Quite the compilation.

John Varvatos commented on the show, “It’s been amazing to team up with another infamous New York institution.  We’ve always tried to embrace New York culture, and it doesn’t get more New York than Saturday Night Live.”

As the evening winded into night, the crowd burst into a celebratory happy birthday for Kenan Thompson with the first notes from Mary Ellen’s vocals.
