The search for the land to build this “dream house” took more than ten years. Finally, the sellers found this 3.6 acres site atop a knoll, at the crest of a ridge, with the property reaching down the Marin Art and Garden Center. The full-circle view encompassed the valley below and Mount Tamalpais afar: a field of wild grass and a grove of fine oak trees covered the ground. With views focusing on Mount Tamalpais, and with the intent being to design a home of simplicity that would take advantage of the magnificent site, the project took approximately three years to complete. The mandated interplay of open space, sunshine, and sight lines is magnified by the plentiful use of full-height glass walls and clerestory windows. Lighting, designed by Jim Benya of Luminae Souter, consists of up-and down-lights, wall washers inside and out, and a Lutron Graphic Eye control system that produces pre-set light scenes via touch of a button, built-in vacuuming, intercom, door speakers, heating and stereo systems. Solar panels heat the swimming pool which is located directly off the kitchen and family room.
