Karl Lagerfield Goes Tiny

Renowned fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfield (famous for Chanel) has announced a creative collaboration with Japanese-inspired Rome based-brand Tokidoki to produce a limited edition miniature version of the designer in vinyl and 10 inches tall.

Tokidoki, which means “sometimes” in Japanese, is the creation of Italian designer Simone Legno. Established in 2005, the brand has appropriated Toyko’s teenager aesthetic to produce clothing, accessories and an abundance of vinyl toys sold in Tokidoki’s boutiques around the world.

The character of K Karl Lagerfield jeans is anything but cute and cuddly. The hard edges and monochromatic palette of the brand hardly seem to fit the endearing appeal of Tokidoki. Even so such an unlikely collaboration has produced a limited run of 1,000 Karls dressed in granite-hued attire with white hair pulled back in a slick plastic ponytail and big bad-boy sunglasses.

Priced at 129 euros or $190 the toys will be available in Tokidoki stores in New York, Milan, and Los Angeles and also in a few select specialty stores for holiday retail. Colette in Paris will get an exclusive launch of miniature Karl next month. In Spring 2010 mini Karl will also appear on T-shirts for Karl’s spring collection.
