Our top ten HAUTE list of designer collections this Spring/Summer 2010 season is on fire, as we focus more on variety than any dominant trend.
1. Givenchy’s aggressive spring collection mixes a biker theme (which equals to to-die-for leather jackets) with graphic black-and-whites, uses digital Moroccan prints, and added leggings and wedges of the season. Riccardo Tisci, who has heavily influenced the look, is clearly still one of the brand’s geniuses.
2. Balmain’s Christopher Decarnin included the broad poufy-shouldered look, which many other designers are now following, along with mini dresses that have been seen on Lauren Conrad, Rihanna, and Madonna. The collection includes trousers with a dyed effect, t-shirts, frocks with ripped up chiffon hems and holes.
3. Alexander McQueen’s most recent collection was quite a dramatic affair for fashion followers (not that his looks have ever been short of outrageous). Fashion’s bad boy paraded models with sanity-defying, futuristic hair in a mix of reptile-print dresses and shoes that would make most people gasp. They appear to resemble something straight out of a Jetson’s show, but we think they might ACTUALLY catch on. Something about them just screams STATUS and MONEY. What do you think?
4. Balenciaga’s Nicholas Ghesquière took another defining turn for his spring collection with more futuristic inspired looks. Ghesquière’s consummation of patched leather leggings and hooded space-age vests were VERY cool. Also included in his collection were simplistic t-shirts, woven separates, togas and even coat dresses.
5. Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz didn’t go the futuristic route, rather felt that sharpening his French elegance was much more effective for Spring/Summer. He used a great deal of femininity with a vast arrangement of floral dresses that were pleated, long, short, or frilly and stuck to necklines like the sweetheart <3, tuxedo, and the off-the-shoulders look. His fabrics also included unstructured satin and linen for jumpsuits (big rage last season and it looks like it will continue to be a trend) with multi-hued reds, peach and pale pinks, all of which are sure to keep cash registers ringing!
6. Marc Jacobs always creates a fun, trendy collection for his audience and followers. We LOVE the preppy looks he chose to showcase for his Spring/Summer 2010 line which included almost everything, from fluttering dresses to large coats, and jumpsuits with the strong shoulder trend. 7. Frida Giannini’s Gucci collection was flawless. The predominant colors were mostly whites paired with black, grey, and blue with structural pieces inspired by architecture, particularly that of Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer, whose fantasy-like buildings stand stark white against the blue Brazilian sky. The silhouettes were relaxed and sexy, but informal with tight trousers that finished just above the ankle. Jackets were unlined, light and floating. For men, ties are out! Instead, opt for shirts with cotton sweaters. The looks are Confident, sexy and perfect for summer.
8. Celine’s Phoebe Philo defined the contemporary movement. Philo’s return to the scene was a loud one, as he showcased looks that captured how women WANT to dress. His collection featured utilitarian elements in beige blouses, and tunics worn under stiff skirts, along with high-waisted pants suggestive of her Chloe days. Although fashion junkies may have frowned on the lack of glittering insanity that usually comes with a Paris fashion show, many admired the achievement of straight forward design thinking that is both comfortable and very chic.
9. Christian Dior’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection is luxurious, elegant and super-sexy thanks to the lingerie-as-outwear trend created by John Galliano. The collection included stylish jackets combined with extremely short skirts, dresses, and almost inappropriate babydolls. Stockings, bras, and corsets are seen all over Dior’s collection, and Galliano managed to make it look sophisticated rather than vulgar. The collection also included cocktail dresses with lovely patterns, and chiffon frocks.
10. Viktor & Rolf’s crazy creations were in full effect for their Spring/Summer 2010 collection. They showed a massive explosion of the previously dreaded tulle fabric we’re seeing everywhere. We realize these looks are reminiscent of ballerinas, but we can’t help but marvel at the creativity behind the craze. The collection included candy colored tulle that was made into various angles of dresses and jackets. The biggest thing about this show in particular was the Swiss cheese skirt that looked like a giant rat had ploughed its way through as the model tethered down the runway!
