Tampa native, Dr. Demetri Arnaoutakis specializes in facial plastic surgery and hair restoration and has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. After receiving an Ivy League education at Columbia, Dr. Arnaoutakis attended medical school at the University of Florida where he was awarded with the highly competitive Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship. Dr. Arnaoutakis sat down with Haute Beauty to discuss his greatest achievements and the biggest misconception about his field.
My greatest achievement:
Becoming the third surgeon in my family. My oldest brother, George, is a cardiac surgeon and my other brother, Dean, is a vascular surgeon.
The future of my field is..
Stem cell projects. There are so many innovative research ideas out there, hopefully a major breakthrough will occur soon.
The biggest misconception about my field is..
Overdone plastic surgery. It is important to find someone who is not only well trained, but also has a good aesthetic eye. I always strive for natural, elegant results with my patients.
My most requested procedures are....
Rhinoplasty, hair transplants, facelifts, botox and facial filler.
What surgical advancements are you most excited about?
Hair transplantation has come a long way. I have adopted a newer technique called follicular unit extraction, this means we extract individual hair follicles from the back of the head for transplantation to the hairline or crown. The beauty of this technique rests in our ability to avoid linear scars in the back of the head.
What are you best known for?
Rhinoplasty, facelifts, botox, facial fillers and hair transplantation
What is your most memorable patient reaction?
A young girl recently elected to have a surgical rhinoplasty with me. Her nose had bothered her for her entire life and she finally was able to undergo the procedure. A week later, we removed her cast and she was immediately ecstatic with her new nose. These moments are what make our profession so rewarding!
What sets my practice apart is…
My dedication and focus to the patients. I come up with a very detailed plan specific to each patient - this is so important because no two patients are alike. My primary responsibility is to listen to my patient's desires and together we can create a plan to achieve their goals.
What I love most about my profession is…
Helping my patients restore their confidence, whether it be aesthetically or functionally.
Career defining procedure?
Rhinoplasty. The nose is the center of our face and draws so much attention.
What new services are you excited to offer?
Hair transplantation without linear scars in the back!
