If there ever was a reason to stay in town on a summer Saturday it’s for the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. Well, you’re not actually in town if you go to this glam happening–you have to make your way over to Liberty Island (otherwise known as home to the Statue of Liberty), but that’s not like having to trek out to Montauk!
In any event, the Classic has long been a celebrity draw. Prince Harry played in 2010 and boldfacers like Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Ruth Wilson, Mindy Kaling, Emma Roberts, Aaron Paul, Olivia Munn, Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Clive Owen, and Padma Lakshmi, have all come out to cheer on the teams and look fabulous in summery linens and hats. Repeat visitors know better than to wear their Manolos or Louboutins—not the best footwear for stomping divots.
This year the guest list was suitably stellar and stylish—Nicky Hilton, Michael B. Jordan, Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale, Elizabeth Olsen, Riley Keough, Jaimie Alexander, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Jourdan Dunn, Coco Rocha, Pheobe Tonkin, Andrew Rannells, Bijou Phillips and Danny Masterson (who did a great job with the divots), Nicky Hilton, Jourdan Dunn, Jasmine Tookes, Olivia Palermo, and Tyson Beckford.
The Classic kicked off with Andrew Rannells singing the National Anthem and Jourdan Dunn in a white romper throwing out the ceremonial ball toss to kick off the match. More than 8000 spectators watched polo legend Nacho Figueras and his Black Watch team take on team Veuve Clicquot. Nacho’s son, Hilario played alongside with Black Watch (of course!) and was awarded MVP of the game, leading his team to a 8-7 victory.
Before and after the game guests mixed, mingled and sipped Champagne, natch! Elizabeth Olsen caught up with pal Rose Byrne; and, after her ball toss, Jourdan Dunn danced to music from DJs Nikki Pennie, Hannah Bronfman and Brendan Fallis. Guests also took part in lawn games, dined on scrumptious edibles from New York City’s favorite food trucks, and sampled glasses of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label, Rosé, and the Champagne House’s newest offering, Veuve Clicquot Rich.
