A new study ranks the fifty most consequential independent K–12 day schools in New York and Los Angeles by what they actually offer students in artificial intelligence — and one West Coast institution is operating in a class of its own.
For a generation, the parents on the Upper East Side, in Pacific Palisades, in Bel Air and Beverly Hills, have asked roughly the same question of their children's K–12 schools: how good is the college matriculation list. The answer set a price — for Brearley and Dalton, $66,800 to $67,480 a year for 2025–2026; for Harvard-Westlake, very nearly the same; for Horace Mann, $61,900 — and the parents wrote the checks. Across thirteen years and one child, that bill exceeds $850,000 before inflation. And until recently, the bill was clearly worth it.
The question those same parents are now asking is different. It is not whether the school sends graduates to Harvard. It is whether the school sends them graduating AI-literate.
A new study is the first to attempt a serious quantitative answer. The Independent School AI Curriculum Index — NYC & LA Edition ranks fifty leading K–12 day schools — twenty-five in each city — by what each school actually offers students in artificial intelligence: in formal curriculum, in named partnerships, in policy frameworks, in cross-disciplinary integration, and in dedicated innovation facilities.
Three schools separate themselves from the field. Harvard-Westlake School, the Studio City and Holmby Hills coeducational K–12, leads the combined index by ten points — driven by the most ambitious AI integration of any K–12 institution in the United States. The Dalton School leads New York at 90.4, anchored by its 35-year-old New Lab for Teaching and Learning. Horace Mann School ranks third overall at 87.8, with the deepest formal computer science curriculum in the index.
Harvard-Westlake leads the combined index at 92.6 — a ten-point margin over the next school. The driver is the most ambitious AI integration of any K–12 institution in the United States: a formal partnership with OpenAI, faculty-wide access to ChatGPT for every member of the teaching staff, and a published school AI policy that reads, in full:
That sentence — affirmative, on-record, signed by the institution — is what separates Harvard-Westlake from every peer school in either city. The integration is led by Maggie Thompson, the school's Associate Director of Teaching and Learning, working with Head of Upper School Beth Slattery. Per reporting in The Harvard-Westlake Chronicle, faculty professional development now includes side-by-side comparison exercises: the same prompt run through ChatGPT, Claude, and Java to develop teacher fluency across AI tools.
No New York school has yet announced an equivalent commitment.

The AI Curriculum Index measures the strength of each school's AI offering to students across five evaluation dimensions, tested through a fixed 72-prompt set across five AI engines. Methodology consistent with prior installments: directional estimates derived from systematic analysis, not logged query runs. Scores reflect publicly available evidence of AI programs, partnerships, faculty training, curriculum integration, and policy frameworks.
Fifty independent K–12 day schools — 25 NYC, 25 LA. Selection criteria: NYSAIS (NYC) or CAIS (LA) accreditation; minimum 50-year operating history with select exceptions for distinguished newer schools; documented admission selectivity below 30% at primary entry points; ISAAGNY (NYC) membership or CAIS equivalent. Boarding schools and public selective schools excluded.
Each dimension normalized 0–100, weighted equally. Composite reported on a 0–100 scale. Differences inside ±3 are noise; differences above 7 are meaningful. No school received pre-publication access. Editorially independent.
The most decisive AI program in any US K–12 independent day school. Per The Harvard-Westlake Chronicle, the school has formed a partnership with OpenAI to think about how something like ChatGPT exists in a school like Harvard-Westlake — and as of late 2025, all faculty have access to ChatGPT. Associate Director of Teaching and Learning Maggie Thompson leads the integration; Head of Upper School Beth Slattery sets the policy framework.
The school also reports running side-by-side comparison exercises in faculty meetings putting the same prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, and Java to develop teacher AI literacy. No NYC school has matched this depth of public commitment.
The most consequential pre-existing AI infrastructure in any US K–12 school. Established over thirty-five years ago — predating ChatGPT by a generation — the New Lab for Teaching and Learning (NLTL) was, in the school's words, "ahead of its time and continues to redefine how advanced technology can shape the future of education." The NLTL is grounded in the Dalton Plan, the school's 1919 pedagogical framework.
When generative AI arrived, Dalton did not need to build a new lab. It already had one. NLTL leads the school's AI integration work across curriculum, supports faculty AI literacy training, and develops innovative AI-enabled curricula. Enrollment of approximately 1,300 students — the largest in the NYC top tier — and a $289 million endowment support the integration.
The deepest formal CS curriculum in NYC. Horace Mann's Computer Science & Engineering department offers a sequence of electives unusual at the K–12 level: Computer Science Theory, Art of Data, Ethical Hacking, Web Application Development, Production Engineering Workshop, and an Advanced CS Seminar. The school has its own Robotics and Innovation Lab — a physical facility where students design products to be manufactured entirely within the lab using advanced equipment. The school does not offer AP courses; the advanced-study options are its own design.
Head of School Dr. Tom Kelly stated publicly that the school is "looking forward to individual disciplines allocating time to exploring the possibility of AI being used as an appropriate teaching tool." Tuition is $61,900 per year (2025–2026).
Founded 1709 — the oldest school in NYC — and currently among the most adaptive on AI. Trinity's computer science department is deeply integrated; the school has restructured English department assessment by assigning more in-class essays to account for generative AI in homework. The integration is taught as "AI is here; we are designing around it" rather than as a prohibition. Trinity's signature classes — Constructing America and ILS — have been re-architected to integrate AI tools as research and writing aides while maintaining the school's commitment to in-class assessment of original thinking.
Strong cross-disciplinary integration: AI used in humanities for research, in sciences for data analysis, in arts for ideation. The 317-year-old school has been more responsive to generative AI than many of its 80-year-old peers.
The highest-ranked single-sex AI offering in the index, on either coast. Marlborough's Honors Research Program places students in mentored research relationships with experts in lab sciences, humanities, and social sciences — and the program has integrated AI tools as research aides across all three tracks. The school's Capstone Program in arts, social justice, or entrepreneurship has AI-enabled tracks. 17 AP & 13 Advanced Topic courses are offered with 14-student average class sizes.
85% acceptance rate to highly-selective colleges. Strong signature programs in Debate and Robotics provide AI-adjacent learning.

Each sub-category was tested in NYC and LA versions of the prompt set. The leaders track structural specialization — Horace Mann for formal CS, Harvard-Westlake for ethics and policy, Geffen Academy at UCLA for partnerships.
Dalton's NLTL was founded 35 years ago. Horace Mann's Robotics and Innovation Lab existed before AI was a topic. Polytechnic's STEM labs were built for an earlier wave of technology. The schools with the strongest AI offerings today are the schools that built deep technology-and-learning infrastructure years before AI required them to. Schools without that infrastructure are now building from scratch — and racing against a moving target.
Harvard-Westlake's published AI policy — affirmative, signed, on the record — is itself a structural advantage. Schools that have publicly committed to AI as a teaching tool receive credit in family decisions, in AI engine retrieval, and in faculty hiring. Schools that remain cautious or unpublicized lose the visibility, even when their internal practice is similar. The lesson: silence is not neutral. Silence is invisibility.
No K–12 school has top-five AI offerings in both NYC and LA. Harvard-Westlake leads LA decisively; Dalton leads NYC. The two strongest AI schools in the country do not share a curriculum or a partnership. Within five years, the school that does it will own the category.
Directional, not exact. What it does not capture. Internal teacher quality, individual student outcomes, faculty AI fluency outside published roles, or AI exposure students receive through extracurriculars and external programs.
