Gavin Tudor Elliot, Managing Attorney of The Elliot Legal Group, speaks with Laura Vallina at Haute Lawyer about his journey as a Lawyer. With over 20 years of legal experience, Gavin brings deep knowledge, strategic insight, and an unwavering commitment to his clients. His dual qualifications in the United States and the United Kingdom uniquely position him to handle complex legal matters with both local and international dimensions. The following are some of the highlights of their conversation:
Laura Vallina: So then you have 23 years in practice. What is the most unusual thing that’s happened in these 23 years?
Gavin Tudor Elliot: Well, I will tell you, about 10 of the top 10 happened while I was a public defender. I’ll give one public defender and then one civil. In the context of public defender work, oftentimes I’d have patients who had, let’s say, mental challenges, and there was this one guy who was in the psych ward, if you would, and he wouldn’t wear clothes, and the slot was about this high to me, and he just couldn’t stand up the whole time. So it was a super uncomfortable interview, staring at a particular appendage throughout the entirety of the speech. As far as civil, so there was this guy, there were these Turkish nationals who were litigating something on both sides of the table, and one of the guys, I was suing the defendant for some misconduct in the context of dealings. So after one of the hearings where I slacked him and his attorney, he comes to me, he’s like, Gavin, I’m like, yes. He’s like, your attorney isn’t here.
LV: Do you have any tips for business owners and investors?
GTE: Due diligence. Do your due diligence, do it on the person, do it on the business, you know, moving past memorialization and handshakes and everything and writing. Do your due diligence. You know, you need to do your due diligence on anyone you’re serious about doing business with, even down to a vendor, to be honest. It doesn’t have to be someone you’re merging a business with or doing something large with. Even a vendor, you want to know who that vendor is because candidly, if they’re serving, servicing your customers and they do something wrong, your reputation is going to be damaged as well.
