As\u00a0we\u00a0age,\u00a0change is inevitable \u2013 especially when it comes to our skin and the challenges each of us faces. Now in their 30s and early 40s, millions of millennials are suddenly\u00a0experiencing\u00a0their next big skin challenge:\u00a0dark spots. What many don\u2019t\u00a0realize\u00a0is\u00a0these\u00a0dark spots\u00a0could very well be\u00a0a clinical skin condition called melasma and your local dermatologist can help.<\/p>\n

Although less well-known by its clinical name than many other skin conditions, melasma is a pigmentation disorder of the skin that primarily impacts women. Melasma often appears\u00a0as\u00a0dark spots seen as\u00a0brown or gray patches on the bridge of the nose, cheeks, forehead, upper\u00a0lip, or chin.\u00a0Aside from appearing on the face, melasma is also sometimes found on the forearms, neck, and shoulders.\u00a0Research shows the prominent location of these spots\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and their\u00a0severity\u00a0\u2013\u00a0can lead to significant challenges in self-esteem and quality of life for patients. More so than any generation before, millennials are actively seeking to reverse the appearance of melasma, and they are spending higher amounts on out-of-pocket cosmetic procedures and prescriptions to achieve their desired results.<\/p>\n

While procedures such as\u00a0chemical peels and laser therapies\u00a0are being used,\u00a0hydroquinone\u00a0is one of the most prescribed and popular\u00a0treatments for patients.\u00a0This topical treatment allows for precise treatment of affected skin, without the higher costs and longer recovery times of surgical services.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, not all forms of\u00a0hydroquinone\u00a0are created equally.\u00a0In 2022 the\u00a0FDA issued warning letters<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to 12 companies for selling\u00a0hydroquinone\u00a0over-the-counter (OTC) without a prescription.\u00a0The FDA also\u00a0alerted consumers there are no FDA-approved or otherwise legally marketed OTC skin-lightening products\u00a0containing\u00a0hydroquinone. This places a serious question mark over many of today\u2019s providers of hydroquinone.<\/p>\n

In fact, the FDA\u2019s notification sent shockwaves across the health and beauty industry as it essentially limited access to hydroquinone to two prescription choices:\u00a0Tri-Luma from\u00a0Galderma Laboratories;\u00a0or customized medicines including those made by 503B FDA-registered outsourcing facilities that include hydroquinone in their unique formulations. A leading example of the latter is SKNV, which makes customized prescription medications for dermatologists \u2013 including 21 containing hydroquinone as an active ingredient.\u00a0With either choice, your\u00a0local dermatologist remains the best source for diagnosing and determining the right treatment for your melasma.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Cleveland\u00a0Clinic<\/a>,<\/strong> pregnant women are almost twice as likely to develop melasma compared to the general population. Other leading causes of melasma are sun exposure, age, hormones (including birth control pills), and even negative reactions to\u00a0particular skin care products or other medications. With millennials waiting longer to have children, the combination of all these factors has created the perfect storm for melasma to emerge as the leading skin condition concern for this generation.<\/p>\n

Dealing with melasma can be frustrating\u00a0but most people agree\u00a0we often feel our best when we look our best.\u00a0<\/strong>Luckily, millennials\u00a0tend to be\u00a0more regimented when it comes to beauty and skincare than generations past. They are more likely to apply moisturizers, spot treatments,\u00a0SPF, and exfoliators.<\/p>\n

For variables within\u00a0one\u2019s\u00a0control, strict sun protection is among the most important practices when preventing or treating melasma. Ultraviolet rays\u00a0can\u00a0trigger the overproduction of melanin levels in the skin, which is more likely to trigger or aggregate dark spots on exposed areas of the skin.<\/p>\n

It's important to consult a dermatologist for a correct diagnosis. Some people may experience melasma for their entire lives, while others have it for a short period of time, such as during pregnancy. Though it is not painful, melasma can cause mental distress, so finding the proper treatment is important for\u00a0each individual.<\/p>\n

Millennials have proven time and again that they are ingenious and often relentless when facing problems others choose to live with or simply ignore. Melasma will be no different, and the good news is several solutions and treatment plans are readily available.<\/p>\n
