On October 20, over 50 cyclists banded together for the American Stroke Association\u2019s CycleNation<\/strong><\/a> South Florida campaign at Nova Southeastern University. United for their health and others, the riders\u2019 efforts helped raise crucial funds to stop the cycle of stroke in its tracks. The all-too-common health issue is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, and it hit especially close to home for the South Florida participants. In 2020, there were 3,519 deaths and 12,570 hospitalizations from a stroke in Miami-Dade and Broward counties alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The folks at the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, know that the most beautiful thing in life is health, and raising awareness for yourself and others is the most simple and effective way to protect it. Whether exercising for prevention or funding the cause, fighting the war against stroke is a form of self and community care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every year, around 800,000 people in the U.S. have a stroke. Even though about 80% of these individuals survive, most are left with varying degrees of disability. The good news: up to 80% of strokes are preventable. This is why it\u2019s critical to care for yourself and others by knowing the signs and practicing prevention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re wary of a stroke in a loved one, think F.A.S.T.<\/strong><\/a> Responding quickly to a potential stroke can make all the difference \u2013 Face Drooping, Arm Weakness, Speech Difficulty, Time to Call 911.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reducing the risk of stroke can be as simple as taking a power walk or hopping on an indoor stationary bike, something the riders at CycleNation knows well. Even more, research shows that getting the right amount of exercise is key for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. It lowers the risk of diseases, strengthens bones and muscles, and improves mental health, especially when it comes to depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The American Heart Association\u2019s \u201cHeart Challenge<\/strong><\/a>\u201d program, which includes South Florida CycleNation, is built on this life-changing knowledge. Helping companies to rally their employees for health and well-being, the campaign centers around events that encourage participants to connect with co-workers and support a great cause while exercising and having a great time. The spirited cyclists of CycleNation South Florida came together to raise over $100,000 for cardiovascular and stroke research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
