Dr. Asaad H. Samra<\/strong>,<\/a> a native of New Jersey, received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1997 from the highly prestigious Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He then returned to NJ where he obtained his medical degree in 2001 from the prominent UMDNJ \u2013 Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Upon graduating, he went on to train in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine\u2019s world-renowned integrated residency program located in the largest medical center in the world, The Texas Medical Center. While there, Dr. A. Samra obtained extensive experience operating with some of the nation\u2019s top surgeons in some of the country\u2019s finest institutions including The Methodist Hospital, Texas Children\u2019s Hospital, and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Haute Beauty sits down with Dr. Samra<\/a> <\/strong>to learn more about fat grafting for breast augmentation.<\/em><\/p>\n

HB: What is fat grafting for the breast?<\/h3>\n

Fat grafting to the breasts.\u00a0This\u00a0is.\u00a0procedure in which fat is harvested from the\u00a0typically\u00a0the\u00a0abdomen and\u00a0flanks and then collected\u00a0and\u00a0injected into the breast. This can be\u00a0done to\u00a0address\u00a0areas that need more volume\u00a0or a\u00a0\u201ctouch up\u201d after an augmentation, or as the\u00a0only form of breast augmentation.<\/p>\n

HB: How does fat grafting for breasts work?<\/h3>\n

One must have\u00a0\u201cenough\u201d fat to be a candidate\u00a0for\u00a0this\u00a0procedure. So if\u00a0you\u2019re too skinny this\u00a0isn\u2019t a good option for you. Liposuction if done firsts to harvest fat. Again, the most common sites are the abdomen and flanks, but hips and outer thighs could also be used.\u00a0The fat it s then collected and injected into the areas of the breast that we\u00a0want\u00a0to increase\u00a0volume or improve shape. The transferred fat does need to find new blood supply to\u00a0survive\u00a0the\u00a0transfer otherwise\u00a0it will simply melt away.<\/p>\n

HB: Who is the best candidate for this procedure?<\/h3>\n

The best candidate is\u00a0someone who needs or wants a small\u00a0improvement and\u00a0has fat\u00a0available to transfer.<\/p>\n

HB: How does this treatment compare to others of the same nature?<\/h3>\n

When compared to implant-based\u00a0augmentation, this is an all-natural option\u00a0using a\u00a0patient\u2019s\u00a0own fat.\u00a0The tradeoff\u00a0is that it is unclear how\u00a0much of\u00a0the\u00a0transferred fat will\u00a0survive the\u00a0transfer (with some reports\u00a0showing as\u00a0much as 50% loss) and\u00a0therefore may need to be repeated.<\/p>\n

HB:\u00a0 What does recovery look like?<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0recovery\u00a0takes about 4-6 weeks and involves recovery from\u00a0both the abdomen and the breasts. Total fat survival, or\u00a0\u201ctake\u201d, is determined at 6 months.
