While our spine doesn't necessarily get the recognition deserved it is important to be aware of the importance of spinal health.\u00a0<em>Haute Beauty<\/em>\u00a0sat down with spine and joint expert\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hauteliving.com\/hautebeauty\/member\/dr-amin-javid\/\">Dr. Amin Javid<\/a>\u00a0to discuss how to build a stronger spine and the supplements needed in maintaining optimal spinal health.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Haute Beauty<\/em>: Which exercises would you recommend to help build a stronger spine?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Dr. Amin Javid:<\/strong> A strong spine is the key to optimal neuromusculoskeletal and organ health.\u00a0\u00a0There are many\u00a0present-day\u00a0misconceptions including what the true \u201ccore\u201d\u00a0muscles even are.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hauteliving.com\/hautebeauty\/dr-amin-javid-talks-his-career-defining-procedure\/\">Spinal<\/a>\u00a0stabilization can be accomplished by strengthening the\u00a0abdominal\u00a0and the deep back muscles. These include the transverse\u00a0abdominis,\u00a0quadratus\u00a0lumborum,\u00a0abdominal\u00a0oblique,\u00a0multifidus, and\u00a0the\u00a0erector spinae\u00a0group.<\/p>\n<p>The general rule\u00a0of spinal stabilization (strengthening)\u00a0adheres to the following logic:\u00a0 since most of us spend\u00a0the majority of our lives in\u00a0flexion\u00a0(bending forward - sitting, leaning over\u00a0while\u00a0carrying out tasks,\u00a0etc..), it is imperative to strengthen what is called the postural muscles\u00a0or spinal extensors. These are the group of muscles that help us to stand erect, to maintain proper biomechanical function. To this end, extension exercises (bending backward) become vital for strengthening and stabilizing the human\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.90210doc.com\/\">spine<\/a>\u00a0while helping to maintain proper spinal curvature.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HB: How beneficial would Yoga or Pilates be in maintaining a healthy and functional spine?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>AJ:<\/strong> Both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hauteliving.com\/hautebeauty\/workout-habits-damaging-spine\/\">Yoga<\/a>\u00a0and Pilates\u00a0may\u00a0be helpful in maintaining a healthy spine to the extent that they assist in core strengthening and increasing range of motion (ROM).\u00a0However,\u00a0there are considerations to be aware of. If one has any\u00a0preexisting\u00a0joint pain or dysfunction, it is important to avoid the positions\/movements that stress those particular joints. Listen and obey\u00a0your\u00a0body\u2019s caution signs. The immaculate human body has numerous defense mechanisms to warn us of injury prior to the injury happening. Pain and \u201ctrembling\u201d are two of these caution signs.\u00a0Keep in mind that you are built differently (and of a different age) then the others in that class and therefore you should customize the class to\u00a0YOUR\u00a0specific comfort level\u00a0- this is not a competition.\u00a0Overall, I tend to be more of an advocate of Pilates given the particular movements and their alignment with the structure and function of\u00a0the human spine. It is not uncommon\u00a0to have\u00a0a patient walk\u00a0into\u00a0my office directly from\u00a0a\u00a0joint\u00a0injury resulting from a Yoga or Pilates class.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HB: Which workouts should patients avoid after having spinal surgery?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>AJ:<\/strong> Workouts to avoid after having spinal surgery typically include those that involve\u00a0compressive\u00a0forces to the spine.\u00a0Of course,\u00a0there are many types of surgeries\u00a0but,\u00a0as a general rule, exercises that involve compression to the spine would likely impede healing or cause further damage. One example of an exercise to avoid after spinal surgery is squatting\u00a0while holding weights.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HB: Are there any supplements that would aid in developing a functional spine?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>AJ:<\/strong> There are several supplements that may assist in spinal health. Among the most common are: Glucosamine\/Chondroitin, Omega-3 fatty acids and\u00a0Methylsulfonylmethane\u00a0(MSN). It is a good idea to consult your physician prior to\u00a0incorporating any of these into your dietary regiment.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>HB: What should patients who are active in sports or strenuous workouts be aware of when recovering from a spinal surgery?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>AJ: Patients who are physically active and have endured spinal surgery should be highly cautious when exercising.\u00a0Rehabilitation after spinal surgery is\u00a0imperative\u00a0for your spine. You must again heed your body\u2019s warning signals: sharp pains, trembling\/shaking, feeling of instability or weakness are all ways that your body communicates with you.\u00a0So, listen!\u00a0Many people are\u00a0(understandably)\u00a0anxious to recover so they do\u00a0too much too soon\u00a0and re-injure themselves. While the movement is key to recovery, it must be measured and incrementally progressed in parallel with what your body can\u00a0withstand.\u00a0Having said that, there are often alternatives to spinal surgery that people are unaware of. I suggest that, prior to having\u00a0any\u00a0form of invasive surgery, you consult at least two other physicians only after you have explored\u00a0conservative options such a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hauteliving.com\/hautebeauty\/dr-javid-discusses-intricate-sciatica\/\">Chiropractic<\/a>\u00a0care by a knowledgeable
