Vitamin C is amongst the most extensively studied\u2014and proven\u2014skincare ingredients, and you\u2019ll be hard-pressed to find a dermatologist who doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>recommend this potent antioxidant for virtually all of their patients. Dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Ahdout of the Roxbury Institute<\/a> in Beverly Hills, California is a firm believer in this ingredient\u2019s many virtues as well and says, \u201cIn addition to helping build collagen and lighten dark spots, vitamin C also prevents damage from environmental pollution and some sun damage when used as a complement to sunscreen.\u201d However, there are several factors to consider when selecting a vitamin C product, and Dr. Ahdout shares a few important points to keep in mind.<\/p>\n

Read the label.<\/strong>
\nThere are many different forms of vitamin C, but according to Dr. Ahdout, \u201cL-ascorbic acid is the most effective derivative of this antioxidant ingredient. Other forms of vitamin C you may come across include ascorbyl palmitate and magnesium abscorbyl phosphate, but L-ascorbic acid provides the best protection against free-radical damage.\u201d In addition to the type of vitamin C used, it\u2019s also important to look for a concentration of 10-20% L-ascorbic acid for optimal performance.<\/p>\n

You should feel it working.<\/strong>
\nMany of us seek out serums and creams that glide on smoothly and provide a pleasant application experience\u2014and that\u2019s OK when it comes to other moisturizers and treatments. \u201cIt\u2019s very common to experience temporary tingling or stinging when applying a properly-formulated vitamin C serum, and this means it\u2019s working. I always tell my patients that vitamin C serums aren\u2019t designed to feel good\u2014it\u2019s about the science and results over time,\u201d Dr. Ahdout shares.<\/p>\n

Packaging makes a difference.<\/strong>
\nSkincare companies spend a lot of money designing packaging that is attractive to consumers, but vitamin C shouldn\u2019t be selected based on looks alone. \u201cIt\u2019s imperative that a vitamin C serum comes in a dark or opaque bottle to protect against oxidation and other damage caused by light, which can reduce its potency and effectiveness.\u201d Dr. Ahdout explains.<\/p>\n

Use it correctly to get the best results.<\/strong>
\nIf you\u2019re using a vitamin C serum at night, you\u2019re wasting your time and money. Dr. Ahdout emphasizes, \u201cThese antioxidant serums help protect against the UV rays and pollution your skin is exposed to over the course of the day. It\u2019s important to apply vitamin C in the morning, and it should be the first product you use after washing your face for optimal absorption.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s Dr. Ahdout\u2019s favorite?<\/strong>
\n\u201cSkinCeuticals<\/a>\u2019 vitamin C serums are like liquid gold, and there\u2019s a formula for every skin type and concern. I recommend C E Ferulic for normal to dry skin, Phloretin CF for redness, discoloration and acne; and the Phloretin CF Gel works well as an aftershave for men.
