It sounds perfect. It seems attainable. So, when you finally sit yourself down to give it a try, you feel discouraged when you find that you're all at once fidgety, impatient, uncomfortable, and battling an onslaught of monkey chatter.<\/p>\n<p>Take a deep breath. That's <em>normal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>\u201cMeditation does not come easily to me. <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>My mind wanders relentlessly. <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>I complained about this once to an Indian monk<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em> and he laughed <\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>and said, <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>it's a pity you're the only human being on the planet <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>who has that problem.\u201d <\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><em>-Elizabeth Gilbert via <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=5347202\" target=\"_blank\">NPR<\/a><\/span>.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Have Patience<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">There's a reason why they call mediation a practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Meditation is\u2014generally speaking\u2014not something that people can achieve immediately. It takes work, it takes discipline, dedication, and constant practice. What's more, meditation is something that is different for everyone. Each individuals\u00a0experience will be different, as will each individual's\u00a0intention. Some come to meditation for stillness, clarity, and quiet, while some practice to search for answers, inspiration, and ultimately, enlightenment.\u00a0Your practice, your mantra, your routine\u2014it will likely be different from your colleagues, your best friend's, or your significant other's. That's <em>okay<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Trust the process. Sit with your thoughts, acknowledge them, and be patient with the time it takes for them to quiet.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Create A Comforting Space<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\"><em>Everyone<\/em> can benefit from having a space in their house, backyard, apartment, or van (shout out to van-life enthusiasts!) where they can go to find peace, calm, and quiet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Create a space that you can go to for your meditation practice that invites feelings of serenity and comfort. Place pillows and blankets in the corner of your bedroom. Open up a window to invite fresh air in. If your desk is your happy place, add a soft smelling candle, or\u00a0incense. Adding crystals to your meditation space can help cleanse the\u00a0energy, and additionally can align with the intentions your setting in your practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Remember, there's no wrong way to create a comforting space. Follow your intuition. Stay true to what works best for <em>you<\/em>.\u00a0If that <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.costco.com\/53%22-Plush-Bear-.product.11755485.html\" target=\"_blank\">giant teddy bear<\/a><\/span> you've been eyeing at Costco will make for <em>your<\/em>\u00a0ultimate meditation cushion then go for it!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Go Digital<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\">It may not\u00a0sound like the best mashup\u2014using a\u00a0cell phone, iPad, or laptop during\u00a0a meditation practice\u2014but\u00a0hear me out. Guidance may be just what you need in order to develop a successful meditation practice. Thanks to meditation apps, that guidance\u00a0can come right to your finger tips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">Popular apps like <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Headspace<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.calm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Calm<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/buddhify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Buddhify<\/a><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.omvana.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Omvana<\/a><\/span> all\u00a0offer a variety of meditation sessions. From five minutes to 30 minutes, these guided meditations can be used\u00a0in just about any circumstance. Turn to your app before bed for better sleep, in the morning to set the tone for the day, or even on your commute to\/from work. In a time where our cell phones\u00a0are\u00a0like an extra limb, it's nice to know that a tech time-out, and a moment of zen, is just a click away.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Join A Group<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Not ready to go it alone and need a little motivation, and inspiration? Join a <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chopra.com\/articles\/the-power-of-group-meditation\" target=\"_blank\">group<\/a><\/span> meditation. From pop-up experiences like <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bigquiet.nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Big Quiet<\/a><\/span>, to actual <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a style=\"color: #ff00ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/meditation-classes-nyc-guide\" target=\"_blank\">in-studio<\/a><\/span> classes, group meditations are a great place for beginners to start. Having a set class schedule, and a specific place to go, may help beginners stick to their meditation practice, too.<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention, paying for a membership at a studio tends to\u00a0have a way of keeping us coming\u00a0back for more. You'll want to get your money's worth\u2014but there's the added bonus of building a strong foundation for your meditation practice, and\u00a0<em>maybe\u00a0<\/em>even making a zen-friend, or two. Ohm, yeah!<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><b>Make <em>Mindful<\/em>\u00a0Moves<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For all my fellow fidgeters, it's <em>okay<\/em> if you can't sit still. There's still hope for us folk that haven't mastered the sitting-on-a-meditation-pouf-in-a-quiet-room style of meditation. For us,\u00a0a moving meditation might be a better place to start. Bonus: It's been said that mindful activities like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2017\/07\/17\/536676954\/forest-bathing-a-retreat-to-nature-can-boost-immunity-and-mood\" target=\"_blank\">forest bathing<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apartmenttherapy.com\/why-knitting-is-the-best-form-of-mindful-meditation-240240\" target=\"_blank\">knitting<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.findyourtrail.com\/blog-health-and-nature\/2015\/4\/10\/how-to-meditate-in-nature\" target=\"_blank\">hiking<\/a>\u00a0(among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnn.com\/health\/fitness-well-being\/blogs\/7-ways-meditate-you-move\" target=\"_blank\">others<\/a>) can have a calming, stress-relieving, meditative effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Have a tip for beginners that we didn't mention here?
