- Bio Michael Bloomberg became the Mayor of New York City in 2002, was reelected in 2005, and convinced the city council to extend the two-term limit so that he could run for a third term in 2008. Bloomberg earned his fortune by selling financial data and analytic tools to companies on Wall Street, which he eventually turned into his namesake company, Bloomberg L.P. The company now has its own magazine, cable network and radio station. He’s also an active philanthropist and recently donated$1.1 billion to his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University.
