The San Francisco Symphony is hosting its first-ever Oktoberfest celebration next Tuesday, October 3. Resident conductor Christian Reif will lead the orchestra in a presentation of Bavarian waltzes and polkas, rollicking opera arias, and traditional drinking songs. “A lot of the classical music that we think is holy and only belongs in a concert hall originated at parties,” Reif said in a statement, adding that a lot of Mozart is definitely party music. “Up until the 19th century, often there was talking during the shows and clapping in-between movements. It was only at the beginning of the 20th century that composers wanted their music experienced without interruption. I mean, the reason why the opera starts with an overture—and usually quite a loud one—is to shut people up!” There will be a sophisticated beer garden for VIP ticket holders complete with unlimited beer and sausages. With the festivities starting at 6 p.m. and the concert beginning at 7 p.m., it promises to be a lively and entertaining evening!

Taste Festival, a culinary event that originated in London in 2004, is hosting its first San Francisco event, the Tastemaker Collective, this weekend. From now until Sunday, October 1, there is a different food-centric celebration. Tonight, tomorrow, and Friday night, there are a series of dinners, cooked by SF’s top chefs in partnership with an internationally acclaimed chef. For example, Friday’s dinner features Tartine Manufactory’s Chad Robertson and London’s James Lowe. The duo will prepare a multi-course wine-pairing meal at the Manufactory. Saturday, September 30, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., the collective is hosting a late night cocktail party at Fort Mason. Think of it as a nightclub with gourmet food! There will be live music, demos, a Diageo bartending battle, and bites from chefs including Michael Cimarusti of Los Angeles’ acclaimed Providence.
Tomorrow night, Thursday, September 28, Rooh and La Mar are joining forces for a special collaboration dinner. The event kicks off La Mar’s 9th anniversary and will feature Peruvian and Indian cuisine. It’s a six-course dinner with alternating courses prepared by Rooh and La Mar, so the first course is from Rooh and consists of a duck shami kebab with foie gras mousse, plum, apricot, hazelnut, and cocoa. The second course, from La Mar, features a local halibut ceviche in sunchoke leche de tigre with artichoke chips. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. and takes place at La Mar. A second dinner, at Rooh, will be on Sunday, November 12.
ODC/Dance group is hosting their annual fundraiser at McEvoy Ranch on Sunday, October 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The ranch has 550 acres of olive groves, flower and vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and vineyards and guests will frolic among it all. There will be a wine-paired lunch, a live auction, and a performance of a new work by ODC choreographers Brenda Way, KT Nelson and Kimi Okada. The event benefits the dance company and ODC’s youth and teen scholarship program.
