The stars came out to celebrate artist Cindy Sherman’s new exhibit at The Broad on Wednesday night.
Stars like Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom as well as fellow art museum chiefs like The Hammer Museum’s Ann Philbin, MOCA’s Philippe Vergne and LACMA’s Michael Govan and artists such as John Baldessari and Ed Ruscha were among the guests who joined Sherman, The Broad founders Eli and Edythe Broad, The Broad’s Founding Director Joanne Heyler and guest curator Philipp Kaiser at a private preview and dinner celebrating the opening of its first special exhibition, Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life.

Guests previewed the exhibition at The Broad and then attended an intimate dinner at Otium. The dinner menu, prepared by Chef Timothy Hollingsworth, included tuna with watermelon and pink peppercorn, spinach fusilli with egg, bacon, clam, and crème fraîche, grilled fish with tamarind, tomato, and fennel, and salted caramel macaroons, among other culinary offerings.
Additional attendees at the fete included artists Meg Cranston, Thomas Houseago, Elliott Hundley, Barbara Kruger, Kenny Scharf, Jim Shaw, Gary Simmons and Marnie Weber as well as notables like Maria Bell, China and Michael Chow, Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest, Lisa Edelstein and Robert Russell, David and Susan Gersh,Maurice Marciano, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Shannon Woodward.

On view June 11 – October 2, 2016, the exhibition is the first major museum presentation of Cindy Sherman’s work to be shown in Los Angeles in nearly 20 years. Featuring more than 120 works drawn primarily from the Broad collection—the largest holding of the artist’s work in the world—the exhibition foregrounds Sherman’s engagement with 20th century popular film and celebrity.
The exhibition features an expansive representation of Sherman’s photographs from throughout her influential career of more than four decades, including two large-scale photographic murals envisioned by the artist specifically for this show and works made this year. Her widely known film stills series, as well as the lesser known rear projection series, both inspired by cinema of the 1950s and 1960s, play a central conceptual role in the show, which includes many works never before shown in Los Angeles.
