Rooftop Bar 230 Fifth Is Selling a $2,300 Hot Dog
The humble hamburger went upscale years ago, and while few people today blink at a $50 ground beef patty, news of the burger’s cousin the hot dog entering the luxury world can still raise eyebrows. Still, Madison Square Park-area rooftop bar 230 Fifth is betting that some of its customers will be willing to fork over beaucoup bucks for the hand-eaten delicacy by unveiling a $2,300 frankfurter.
There’s no mystery to this meat. The deluxe hot dog is a foot-long blend of “richly marbled wagyu beef dry aged for 60 days by [local butcher] DeBragga” coated with black truffles served on a brioche bun toasted with white truffles and coated with organic ketchup and mustard imported from France. The accompanying Vidalia onions are caramelized in Dom Perignon champagne and century-old balsamic vinegar. The caviar-dotted sauerkraut is braised in Cristal, and gold leaf completes the street meat chic presentation.
You’ve got to call 212-725-4300 and place your order for the haute dog 48 hours in advance. Should second thoughts arise between the order and the scarfing, keep in mid that all proceeds benefit altruistic New York food pantry City Harvest.
Those looking for smaller sticker shock on a healthier item can head to the East Village’s Norther Spy Food Co., which recently unveiled an entree consisting of three roasted carrots priced at $18.
