City Hall Celebrates Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart In San Francisco”
More than 1,000 people spent Valentines Day crammed in San Francisco’s City Hall to honor singer Tony Bennett and the 50th anniversary of his song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the song was sang to Bennett by a symphony, a children’s chorus and a Gay Men’s chorus at the event Tuesday. The song’s first public performance was in December 1961 in the Venetian Room of the Fairmont Hotel. It was played throughout the Bay Area on the radio and in public performances in Union Square in honor of the holiday.
It has become engrained in the city’s culture and is played at the end of every home victory of the San Francisco Giants.
