Hayes B. Gladstone is a distinguished dermatologic surgeon based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the former Director of Dermatologic Surgery and Associate Professor at Stanford University. With an office in San Ramon, California, Dr. Gladstone has two decades of experience in reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. He has been performing hair restoration since 1999 and currently specializes in the follicular unit extraction technique using advanced SmartGraft technology. As the leader of the Gladstone Clinic, he prides himself on his unwavering commitment to superior, attentive, and compassionate care. Recognized by Who’s Who, Consumer’s Guide, Castle Connolly Top Doctor and other publications as an elite dermatologic surgeon and clinician on multiple occasions, Dr. Gladstone has shared his perspective on reconstructive and aesthetic surgery through numerous publications as well as presentations both nationally and internationally.
As the son of a midwest general practitioner, Dr. Gladstone always admired the relationship that his dad had with his patients. Aside from his lifelong passion for compassionate care, his inquisitiveness towards the advancement of the field has helped propel his career. As Dr Gladstone recalls:
“I was fascinated with the sense of discovery in medicine and the possibility of pushing the frontiers of medical scientific research in order to help people.”
Before entering medicine, Dr Gladstone was a sports editor and professional photographer in Colorado. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and went on to complete his surgical internship and a research fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. After training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington, he decided to transition to Dermatology and also completed an NIH fellowship also at the University of Washington. He followed with a fellowship in Mohs Surgery, Reconstruction and Cosmetic surgery under the mentorship of renowned dermatologic surgeon Ronald L. Moy, MD at the University of California, Los Angeles. He holds medical licenses in California and Hawaii and is certified by the board of Dermatology through 2021.
What sets Dr. Gladstone apart from his colleagues in dermatologic surgery is his multidisciplinary background contributing to his expertise in Mohs and Reconstructive Surgery and an comprehensive aesthetic vision and approach in cosmetic and rejuvenation procedures. Regarded as an intellectual authority and thought leader in his field, he has been invited to many conferences all over the world to give presentations and lectures regarding cosmetic surgery and dermatologic surgery. He has been on the Board of Directors and the past President of the San Francisco Dermatology Society as well as the Board of Directors and past President of the Pacific Dermatology Association, the largest regional dermatology society in the United States. He was also on the Board of Directors of both the San Mateo Division and the California Division of the American Cancer Society. He is the past Director of the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and is currently on its Board of Directors.
Dr Gladstone’s approach to the cosmetic patient is to customize the process to the particular needs of the patient and to rejuvenate in natural and calibrated manner. “I want to create a natural balance and harmony. I want to create a result which represents the best of the patient at that particular time point, rather than focusing on making that person appear 10-15 years younger. I want the patient’s friends to say ‘Wow, you look great and rested,’ but are not sure why—they don’t realize that the patient had a cosmetic procedure.” To that end, Dr Gladstone uses minimally invasive procedures such as injectables and lasers and less invasive surgical approaches to achieve these goals.
Dr. Gladstone is perhaps most renowned for co-founding the nonprofit Blade and Light International with Dr. Muram Alam of Northwestern in 2003. The organization aims to provide patients in developing countries with limited resources comprehensive surgical dermatologic treatment including mohs surgery, as well as education and training for physicians in those parts of the world.
As a leader in his specialty, Dr. Gladstone keeps a close eye on prevailing trends in the medical industry. In particular, he has found that new technologies are increasingly changing practices. He noted:
“I am particularly interested in the role of personalized medicine including nanotechnology and molecular targeting, and on the macro level, computers, virtual reality and robotics. The human body is amazingly complex, and it will require multidisciplinary approaches between clinicians, scientists, engineers, computational experts, social scientists and humanists in order to solve many of the diseases that we face and improve the quality of life for our population.”
After more than a quarter century dedicated to medicine, Dr. Gladstone shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Explaining his goals for the next five years, he said:
“ At the Gladstone Clinic, I want to create a more comprehensive, personalized and evidence-based approach to both skin cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as rejuvenation and aesthetic diagnosis and treatments which will include cutting-edge technology and research. Beyond the Gladstone Clinic, I want to play a role in improving access to superior healthcare globally.”
