One of the topics we tend to overlook in dentistry is dental hygiene especially during pregnancy. Pregnancy gingivitis is one of the most common issues for women during the second trimester of pregnancy. Swollen gums, which may be sore and more susceptible to bleeding, are common during pregnancy. This inflammation of the gums is called gingivitis. Pregnancy gingivitis is caused by the hormonal changes that increase the blood flow to the gum tissue and cause your gums to be more sensitive, irritable, and swollen. There are a wide range of causes to pregnancy gingivitis but it is most common due to hormone levels of the body during the second part of pregnancy.

These hormonal changes also can effect the body’s normal response to bacteria, which can cause periodontal infections. This makes it easier for plaque to build up on your teeth and makes you more susceptible and prone to getting gingivitis. There are different stages and severity levels to pregnancy gingivitis if not treated properly during pregnancy.

Some pregnancy dental hygiene tips include:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
  • A soft toothbrush may cause less irritation to your gums.
  • You should also keep your scheduled professional cleanings and discuss any problems with your dentist. Most women get a cleaning during the second trimester, which is usually when it is known to be a safer time during pregnancy.

Not treating gingivitis can be harmful and cause many effects during pregnancy. If gingivitis is left unchecked it may lead to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. Periodontitis during pregnancy increases the chance of preterm birth. They key to having good oral hygiene and healthy gums during pregnancy is maintaining oral health and getting regular check-ups and cleanings before pregnancy so that during pregnancy the gums are not susceptible to gingivitis. Most of the time gums go back to normal health after delivery of the baby. Make sure to follow-up with your dentist for normal cleanings after your pregnancy.
