Mitt Romney clinched the Republican presidential nomination by winning the Texas primary last night, but he celebrated in Las Vegas alongside lead cheerleader Donald Trump. The Sin City event raised $2 million for the Romney campaign. It also allowed Trump to introduce Romney to Sheldon Adelson, the casino magnate who almost single-handedly buoyed Newt Gingrich’s bid earlier in the contest with a reported $20 million cash infusion.
But to few people’s surprise, it was Trump and not Romney who wound up basking in the spotlight thanks to a litany of boldly worded criticisms of President Barack Obama. Shortly before the fundraiser, Trump again questioned the legitimacy of Obama’s U.S. birth certificate, which the White House released last year thanks partly to Trump’s voluble requests that it be made public. Speaking about the long-form certificate with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer by phone, Trump said that “” … a lot of people do not think it was authentic.” Romney has stopped questioning Obama’s birthplace, but for now is still getting cozy with the provocative Trump as the real estate titan brings in the big bucks for the official nominee’s run.
