Modern Citizen’s Gorgeous Flagship Boutique Now Open

San Francisco-based fashion brand, Modern Citizen, has opened a new flagship boutique on Union Street. Modern Citizen was founded four years ago by two Stanford grads, Lizzie Agnew and Jess Lee. With backgrounds in the retail industry, Agnew and Lee noticed that the fashion world was lacking in a shopping experience geared toward the modern day female. They set out to create a line that would appeal to the “modern citizen.” Think beautiful, timeless pieces that are ideal for a busy working professional.

The duo considers their brand a mindset rather than a style and hopes their clothing empowers females to make positive and impactful moves in their lives. Modern Citizen started as a direct-to-consumer e-commerce business. Through word of mouth and Instagram, it quickly developed a large cult-like following. Modern Citizen’s collection of clothing is classic and for the most part, print-free. Pieces will debut at the flagship a week before they can be purchased online with new products appearing every two to three weeks.

The shop is stocked with Modern Citizen’s black label, a line that is crafted in-house as well as a few other designers whose vision and product aligns with Modern Citizen. It’s an expertly curated assortment of chic wearable jumpsuits, comfortable dresses, and cozy layering sweaters—all washing machine friendly. Jackets, from a cropped patent motorcycle bomber to a full-length cashmere coat to a metallic double-breasted blazer, are plentiful and perfect for the Bay Area’s quickly changing climate.

Lee designed the store herself along with Therese Jacinto and Studio Revolution, and its sleek, minimalist decor lets the clothing and selection of home goods and beauty products shine. The bright white boutique feels more like a loft than a traditional retail space, and that’s on purpose. They want Modern Citizen to be a place where like-minded females gather for panel discussions, intimate workshops, and seasonal parties.
