The Iconic Dior Saddle Bag Is Back

In her latest runway show for Christian DiorMaria Grazia Chiuri brought back the Maison’s iconic Dior Saddle Bag, originally conceived by the former Creative Director John Galliano in the late 1990s, and first showcased in his Spring-Summer 2000 Ready-to-Wear collection. The design was inspired by the equestrian world, mirroring a horse saddle with an emblematic ‘D’.

One of the most recognizable and popular bags for Dior, it was worn by countless artists and celebrities around the world, including Beyoncé, Elle Macpherson and, one of the most notable mentions, Sarah Jessica Parker as her character ‘Carrie Bradshaw’ in the show Sex and the City. Maria Grazia Chiuri has created two versions of the bag. The first comes in monochrome leather. The second comes in a patchwork design, paying homage to the 1970s with inscriptions reading “Peace and Love Dior,” made in oblique canvas and finely-beaded embroidery, all done by hand and in eye-catching, contrasting colors. Fringe and metal-embellished ethnic straps offer the wearer a cross-body option.

“I thought this collection would be an opportunity to revive its timeless beauty,” began Chiuri. “I consider this icon of the House’s recent history the perfect accessory to deal with this battle that is daily life. Indeed, the Saddle Bag is a bag that is worn in exactly the same way as a shirt or jacket, and it’s so comfortable to wear with its long strap that yo almost forget it’s there. The Saddle Bag is also practical because it allows you to carry everything you need with you. It’s for this reason that I wanted it larger and more robust, but also very colorful, embroidery or with beaded fringe because, like a chameleon, it adapts to all situations.”
