San Francisco’s brightest style star and Haute Living’s fashion editor-at-large, Sonya Molodetskaya has debuted a new collection of her clothing label, Major Obsessions. “Season Two” as she’s putting it, is a collaboration with beloved local designer Vasily Vein, who also happens to be from Molodetskaya’s native Russia. Vein is known for his over-the-top frothy gowns that incorporate lace and tulle. These elements are heavy in the collection, Vasily Vein for Major Obsessions, that debuted at a fashion show in honor of Willie Brown’s birthday.

“I’ve been working with Vasily for many years, he designed gowns for me for the Opera and Symphony Openings,” Molodetskaya explains how the partnership came about. “He has amazing skills, especially with tulle and lace. It was only natural that he and I decided to make something together, so that his ideas and my ideas combined and that is how the whole collection came up.”

Major Obsessions is Molodetskaya’s year-and-a-half old fashion brand. It consists of pieces and fabrics—billowing cape-like robes, high-low ball skirts, velvet, sequins, etc.—that she’s majorly obsessed with. She created two collections in collaboration with seamstress Altana Danzhalova and her latest presentation showed a sense of more refinement. Tulle, fur, feathers, and polka dots are featured throughout.

This collection is also customizable. “We are going to do trunk shoes and people can come, they can look, they can touch, they can feel,” Molodetskaya says. “They can also customize each piece.  If someone doesn’t want, you know a piece of tulle attached to a sleeve or someone wants the same style but simpler or shorter or longer—they can customer make.”

How did former Mayor Willie Brown feel about sharing his birthday with his designer girlfriend’s fashion show? He was a great sport. “He likes fashion himself—you know he’s one of the best dressed men in San Francisco, so for him, it only makes sense to combine his birthday with something glamorous, fashionable, and stylish.”

Major Obsessions next trunk show will take place on Sunday, April 22. Direct message Molodetskaya on Major Obsession’s Instagram for more details.
