Danielle Harrington On Her Sports Illustrated Cover & Tyra Banks

She burst onto the scene just last year, but already the California girl has made history by being the third African-American woman to land a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover following icons Beyonce and Tyra Banks. It’s safe to say, her career is off to a good start. Here, the Instagram sensation dishes on her charity work, what’s next for her, top tips for taking a photo like a model, and more.

How did you feel when you first found out about your Sports Illustrated cover and to be told by Tyra Banks no less?

It was the best moment. I was so excited but very confused when I first got in the room because I thought I had crashed Tyra’s shoot. After the reveal, I was in complete shock. It was indescribable and to have someone like Tyra Banks, one of me idols, tell me I was the cover of SI Swimsuit 2018 was surreal.

What message do you hope the cover sends to young girls?

I hope it instills a sense of encouragement to young girls everywhere. In my modeling career, I have dealt with rejection and learning to embrace my body and my flaws. I want the younger generation to love themselves for who they are. There is no one way to be beautiful or one standard of beauty. No matter where you can come from, if you work hard and believe in yourself, you can make your dreams come true.

You’ve had such a big year already. What’s next for you?

It has been such a big year already, so I’m still continuing to take it all in. I want to enjoy this moment and the excitement that surrounds it. I’m also taking time to partner with charities and give back to my community. That is something that is a priority for me on a personal level. Additionally, I’m working on a really exciting project for Sports Illustrated TV. SI cameras were with me when the cover was revealed and have continued to be with me on this crazy journey. Tell us more about your charity work.

I’m the ambassador of a charity bowling event called Stars and Strikes, benefiting A Place Called Home. It’s a great charity that supports intercity youth and something I’m proud to be part of.

You’re a California girl. What are some of your favorite spots in LA?

First and foremost, my grandma’s house. That is the first place I head to when I land in LA. I also have a deep love for Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. When I’m in the area, I enjoy laying low spending time with family and friends.

What are your favorite spots in NYC?

I must admit, a lot of times, you’ll find me on the couch watching Netflix. Especially in the winter. I do enjoy a good karaoke night at The Handy Bar on Tuesdays. Go to karaoke song: anything Mariah Carey.
