Angelina Jolie is encouraging her children to live a life with purpose but reminds her daughters specifically to stand in solidarity with women.

“I think of how hard women fought to get us to where we are today.  Everything counts, from the way you hold yourself in daily life and educate yourself on your own rights, to solidarity with other women around the world,” says Jolie in an interview with ELLE.

The interview is a conversation between her and U.S. Secretary John Kerry. Together they thoughtfully discuss the topics and issues regarding what it means to be American, the problematic issue of rape and sexual violence used as weapons of war, and women’s rights.

It’s this very notion that propels Jolie as a mother to her children, but moreover as a mother to her three daughters, Vivienne, 9, Shiloh, 11, and Zahara, 13, to stand for women and to live their life with purpose.

“I tell my daughters, ‘what sets you apart is what you are willing to do for others. Anyone can put on a dress and makeup. It’s your mind that will define you. Find out who you are, what you think, and what you stand for. And fight for others to have those same freedoms. A life of service is worth living,’” said Jolie.

Angelina Jolie is on the February cover of ELLE to garner attention to International Women’s Day on March 8.
