Mandy Teefey, the mother of Selena Gomez, wants you to know she’s not controlling her daughter.
Mandy Teefey spoke to Gossip Cop about her daughter’s on-off relationship with Justin Bieber and though she’s “not happy” about her daughter’s choice, she believes Selena Gomez is free to do as she wants.
“Selena can live her life however she wants as long as she is happy, safe and healthy,” said Teefey.
Her response comes to light after much speculation that both mother and daughter were not on good terms when Teefey exited her role as manager to the singer. She speaks of their mother-daughter quarrels and the fallout of her managerial role in her daughter’s career.
“Every mother and daughter has disagreements…. We never expected to manage her whole life. We lost family time because the only time we saw her, we talked business,” she said.
Gomez’s recent health scare and life-changing surgery have been an additional stressful factor for Teefey. Her daughter underwent a kidney transplant during the summer of 2017; her friend Francia Raisa donated the organ.
“When you are young, you feel invincible and she had to learn that she was not able to be your typical 20-year-old,” said Teefey.
Now that Gomez is out of the hospital and back in the studio producing music for her newly anticipated album, church attendance, and reconciliation with her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, Teefey says her daughter is as in charge of her life as she is about her love life.
“She is 25 years old and knows what is at stake with her health. I do not control her the way it has been portrayed. Selena is an adult and can make her own choices,” said Teefey.
Some of those choices included Gomez going on a social media purge last week. She unfollowed plenty of celebrities on her Instagram except for some of her close friends like Taylor Swift. Perhaps the most interesting observation between this mother-daughter fallout is Gomez’s latest post and the caption that went with it.
