Tim Cook Believes Social Media Is Being Used To Manipulate and Divide UsApple’s CEO says social media is the cause for manipulation and divide amongst people.

In an interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook discussed the very much talked about social media, 2016 elections, and privacy matters.

Congress has been the least happy about the alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election it has been investigating.

“You created these platforms…and now they’re being misused. And you have to be the ones who do something about it — or we will,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) Facebook’s, Google’s, and Twitter’s lawyers.

Cook, on the other hand, thinks the issue is rooted in something much deeper than that.

“I don’t believe the big issue are ads from foreign governments. I believe that’s like point one percent of the issue. The bigger issue is that some of these tools are used to divide people, to manipulate people, to get fake news to people in broad numbers so as to influence their thinking. This to me is the number one through 10 issue,” said Cook.

Upon the investigations that started a few months back, the election content produced by Russians reached more people than all three companies first alluded. Facebook alone reported that it had only targeted 10 million of its users, but the new findings Facebook presented depicts 126 million people were strategically targeted by ads Russia bought.
