Amazon bought all the exclusive television rights for Lord of the Rings in an attempt to gain new members to its streaming and shopping club, Prime.

The company announced on Monday, Nov. 13 what it plans to do with its new purchase—fully intending to turn Lord of the Rings into an Amazon Prime Original television series. It will be a multi-season production.

“We are delighted that [they], with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins.

“Sharon [Tal Yguado, Head of Scripted Series] and the team…have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”

Author J.R.R. Tolkien created Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. The Fellowship of the Ring is the first installment in the famed fantasy trilogy. That trilogy made nearly $3 billion and 17 Academy Awards.

The rights bought from the Tolkien Estate and Trust. The estate, HarperCollins and the films’ distributor New Line Cinema will help Amazon produce the television series.
