The Mill Valley Film Festival came to a close over the weekend with a special screening of the movie Lady Bird. The film’s writer and director, Greta Gerwig, was at the event and she participated in a question and answer segment. Andrew Garfield, Jason Clarke, and Kristin Scott Thomas are a few of the other celebrities who were in Marin for the festival.

More than 200 people came together to celebrate the seventh annual Headstand Gala on Friday, October 13 at the St. Regis Hotel. Headstand is an organization that empowers students, from kindergarten through high school, through yoga and mindfulness techniques. The evening included a champagne reception, silent auction, and performance by pianist Alan Choy. Jan Yanehiro, the director of communications at the Academy of Art University, was presented with the Child Advocacy Award. Notable attendees included doctor Clara Shayevich and ballerina Yuan Yuan Tan.

Last Wednesday at the Ritz-Carlton, philanthropists, techies, and financial professionals gathered with teachers and city officials to support the San Francisco Education Fund. At the Back to School Bright Futures Gala, Glady Thacher was honored. Thacher founded the fund in 1979 as a way of connecting the community to the public school system. Over the years, the nonprofit has donated more than $7 million to education grants. State Senator Scott Wiener and the CEO of Xoom, John Kunze, were a few of the significant figures who joined in on the fun.
